LED Lights - Christmas is Not All LED Lighting is For

Over the past five years, LED light (light-emitting diodes) have become increasingly popular and affordable. Although the technology discovered in the early 1900s has already been used for decades in commercial applications such as billboards, traffic lights, and exit signs, it is now making its way in the house much more than in the display. on your electric alarm clock.

The many uses and types of LED lamps

Also known as solid-state lighting, LEDs use several types of inorganic semiconductor materials to create visible light to the eye. These materials, which vary according to the required color, are enclosed in very strong plastic, allowing the use of lights in many practical applications, from simple calculators to the most advanced electronics.

Other items using LED technology include the lights of automobiles, motorcycles, bicycles, and boats, traffic lights, exit signs, emergency landing light strips at airports, as well as lanterns and flashlights. Places like Las Vegas would be totally different, not to mention darkness, without the use of light-emitting diodes. Even some museums are now turning to LED lamps because the amount of ultraviolet (UV) rays emitted relative to the heat generated by other types of lighting is negligible and protects valuable works of art and delicate artifacts from heat damage.

Extremely useful applications in the world of medicine, including pulse oxymeters that measure the amount of oxygen saturation in the blood, also use LEDs, as well as in a water sterilization process and in a special type. phototherapy used for treatment. acne. Wireless optical computers and mice also use light-emitting diodes, as well as many sports equipment, toys, flashlights, mobile phones, remote controls and video games.

For lighting purposes, LEDs are also used in light bulbs, garden lamps, streetlights, building lighting, stage lighting, large video screens and emergency lighting for police cars, fire trucks, and ambulances.

As technology evolves, LED lamps are expected to be used anywhere inside and outside the home, giving people the opportunity to change both the color and intensity of their lighting by activating a switch. special effects and atmospheres.

Basically, there are three types of LED lighting: alphanumeric, lighting and miniature. Each of these types also exists in a variety of shapes and sizes because the plastic that maintains the diodes is able to take different forms. Groups of LEDs can be placed in straight lines, such as clocks or signs, or in a set of geometric, uniform and irregular patterns.

Among the many advantages of LED lamps are:

- Most LED lamps gradually weaken over time, instead of "turning off abruptly" as other bulbs do. The average lifespan of most types of LED lamps is 35,000 to 50,000 hours of use, compared to an average of 1,000 to 2,000 hours of light from incandescent bulbs and 30,000 hours for fluorescent tube lighting.

- There is no mercury or hazardous materials in LED lamps, which allows them to be discarded with household garbage instead of being disposed of with care, as are fluorescent bulbs.

- Since the case used to create the light-emitting diodes is extremely resistant to epoxy plastic, it is virtually indestructible and can also be used in difficult external conditions.

Some of the known drawbacks of LED light include:

- Light-emitting diodes are significantly more expensive, at least initially, based on the price per light compared to traditional forms of lighting.

- The overall performance of light-emitting diodes will mainly depend on the ambient temperature of the environment or the ambient temperature. Adequate thermal dissipation of the diodes is necessary if the application is regularly in contact with high temperatures.

- LEDs are not capable of producing collimated beams of light, which are parallel light rays, such as those used in lasers, without the addition of a collimation lens.
